The trails up Mount Fuji

Yoshida Trail

13.8 km (8.6 miles) there and back · about 1,450 m (4,757 ft) of climbing · about 6 hr 10 min up, 3 hr 35 min down · starts at the Yoshida Trail 5th Station, 2,305 m

The busy one, on the Yamanashi side, with yellow signs and more huts than any other trail. You go up on rock and gravel and come down a separate zigzag descent. The 5th Station gate shuts from 2 pm to 3 am unless you've booked a hut, and closes for the day once 4,000 climbers are through.

Subashiri Trail

13.1 km (8.1 miles) there and back · about 1,700 m (5,577 ft) of climbing · about 6 hr 25 min up, 3 hr 20 min down · starts at the Subashiri 5th Station, 2,000 m

Starts lower, in forest, and joins the Yoshida Trail near the top, so the last stretch is shared. The way down is the Sunabashiri, a long run down loose volcanic sand. Red signs.

Gotemba Trail

18.9 km (11.7 miles) there and back · about 2,300 m (7,546 ft) of climbing · about 8 hr 40 min up, 3 hr 30 min down · starts at the Gotemba New 5th Station, 1,440 m

The longest and lowest start of the four, on open volcanic gravel with the fewest huts. Quiet for a reason. The descent takes in the Osunabashiri, Fuji's big sand run, which is most of the fun.

Fujinomiya Trail

8.6 km (5.3 miles) there and back · about 1,320 m (4,331 ft) of climbing · about 5 hr 10 min up, 2 hr 40 min down · starts at the Fujinomiya 5th Station, 2,400 m

The shortest and the steepest, starting highest of the four on the Shizuoka side. Up and down on the same rocky path, so expect two-way traffic. A fast way to the top for anyone fit, but less time to get used to the altitude.

Good questions

Do you need a permit to climb Mount Fuji?

You need to pay ¥4,000 per person on every trail and register before you climb. On the Yoshida Trail that means booking a slot in Yamanashi's reservation system. On Subashiri, Gotemba and Fujinomiya you register through Shizuoka's FUJI NAVI app or on site, do a short e-learning course and test, and collect a wristband.

When can you climb Mount Fuji?

Only in the summer season. In 2026 the Yoshida and Subashiri trails opened on 1 July and Fujinomiya and Gotemba on 10 July, all closing on 10 September. Outside the season the trails to the summit are closed, and the authorities strongly advise against climbing.

Which Mount Fuji trail is best for beginners?

The Yoshida Trail is the usual first climb: the most huts, the most help and the best-known route. The Fujinomiya Trail is the shortest, but it's steep and the same path up and down.

Can you climb Mount Fuji in a day?

The climbing is about 5 to 9 hours up and 3 to 4 down depending on the trail, so it's possible in a long day. Most people book a mountain hut and go up for sunrise. Starting between 2 pm and 3 am needs a hut booking on every trail, tents aren't allowed, and the summit can be close to 0°C before dawn even in summer.

Can you drive to the Mount Fuji 5th stations?

Not to all of them in season. In 2026 private cars were barred from the Fuji Subaru Line to the Yoshida 5th Station from 3 July to 10 September and from the road to Subashiri from 1 July to 10 September. Fujinomiya has a restriction too: you park at Mizugazuka and take the shuttle bus or a taxi up. Gotemba has no restriction.

Can I get a print of my own Mount Fuji climb?

Yes. Send the file from your phone or watch, Strava, Komoot or any app that exports GPX, and we draw your trail up the mountain with the summit, the stations and the huts named.
