Where it hurts
The flat
No hills to break it up, so the same muscles do all the work for 42 km.
The sun
Winter on the Gold Coast, but still bright and warm by mid-morning.
The long straights
Surfers Paradise to Miami is a long way when you can see it all.
Elevation
About as flat as a marathon gets: the organiser's figures put the whole course between 1 m and 10 m above sea level, with 62 m of climbing and 65 m of descent over 42 km.
