The NYC Marathon route, mile by mile

  1. Miles 1 and 2Straight onto the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge from Staten Island. The biggest climb of the day comes first, then a long run down into Brooklyn.
  2. Miles 3 to 12About eleven miles of Brooklyn: up Fourth Avenue through Bay Ridge, Sunset Park and Park Slope, past Barclays Center near mile 8, then Bedford Avenue through Clinton Hill and Williamsburg. Flat, loud and very easy to run too fast.
  3. Miles 13 to 16The Pulaski Bridge, just before halfway, takes you into Queens past Court Square, and the Queensboro Bridge at mile 15 takes you into Manhattan. On the bridge it goes quiet for the only time all day.
  4. Miles 16 to 19Off the bridge and north up First Avenue, the crowd several deep, then over the Willis Avenue Bridge into the Bronx just after mile 19.
  5. Miles 20 and 21New for 2026: after the Willis Avenue Bridge the course turns left onto East 135th Street and right onto Alexander Avenue. A short loop of the Bronx, then the Madison Avenue Bridge back to Manhattan at about mile 20.5.
  6. Miles 21 to 24Past Marcus Garvey Park and south down Fifth Avenue through Harlem, rising gently beside Central Park, then into the park by the Guggenheim at East 90th Street and on past the Met.
  7. Mile 25 to the finishDown the east side of the park, out along Central Park South to Columbus Circle just before mile 26, and back in for the last stretch to the finish by Tavern on the Green.

Where it hurts

The Verrazzano

The steepest mile of the day is the first one, uphill onto the bridge. Hold back, there are 25 more.

The Queensboro Bridge

A long drag around mile 15, and quiet after the noise of Brooklyn. Then First Avenue hits you.

Fifth Avenue

A long, gradual rise from about mile 22, just when the legs have least to give.

Central Park

Rolling, not flat. Save something for the last three miles.

Elevation

The climbing comes on the five bridges, the Verrazzano most of all, then on Fifth Avenue and through Central Park near the end. Between them the roads are mostly flat. It rewards running evenly more than running fast early.

Good questions

How long is the NYC Marathon?

26.2 miles, or 42.195 km. Your watch will probably say more: GPS drifts on the bridges and between Manhattan's buildings, and very few runners hold the racing line.

Where does the NYC Marathon start and finish?

It starts at Fort Wadsworth on Staten Island, at the approach to the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, and finishes in Central Park by Tavern on the Green.

Which boroughs does it go through?

All five: Staten Island, Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan and the Bronx, in that order, before finishing in Manhattan.

When is the next NYC Marathon?

Sunday 1 November 2026, according to the organiser.

What changed on the course for 2026?

The Bronx. After the Willis Avenue Bridge the course now turns left onto East 135th Street and right onto Alexander Avenue, before crossing back to Manhattan on the Madison Avenue Bridge.

Can I order a print before race day?

Yes. Order now, choose Send later, and send your file after you finish. It makes a good gift to hand over before the race.
